Whenever we hear the word “model” or “modeling” we often think of attractive persons wearing or using a certain fashion or product that they’re supposed to endorse. But there’s a type of modeling where the product is, essentially, the model itself. Glamour modeling, unlike your typical fashion or commercial modeling, puts more emphasis on the subject than it does on the clothes the model is wearing, if any at all.

Yes, glamour modeling is more sexual in nature, because it’s all about creating sexually provocative images. In other words, those who are into glamour modeling do a bit of nudity or semi-nudity, depending on the job. It does, however, does not insist on nudity unless it has been agreed upon by all parties involved.

But although glamour modeling does involve some nudity and a certain degree of eroticism, it is not pornographic, and is more often than not done in very good taste. For all intents and purposes, glamour modeling is just another form of artistic expression.

Unlike other types of modeling, glamour modeling doesn’t impose too many requirements or restrictions. There aren’t any size issues, or minimum height requirements. All it requires is that a model should have a good physique, be 18 years and above, and most importantly, be very secure in her appearance. This probably explains why glamour modeling is one of the most popular types of modeling in existence, with the increasing number of models who are foraying into glamour modeling each day.

The advent of lad mags such as FHM, Maxim, Stuff and Zoo also gave rise to many glamour models. And of course, there’s the legendary Playboy, which has made household names out of women like Pamela Anderson and Carmen Electra.

Glamour modeling, however, is not limited to just photo shoots for magazines. Many glamour models are also hired to take part in car events as well as promotional trade shows.

Nowadays, one of the top names in glamour modeling is Keeley Hazell, who started out posing topless for The Sun’s Page 3 and is now one of the most popular glamour models in the world. She is regularly featured in Zoo magazine, and has appeared in FHM. Then there’s Katie Price, who is also known by the name Jordan. Also a Page 3 model, she has gone on to make a splash on the covers of FHM, Maxim, Nuts, Front, Zoo Weekly, Sky, Esquire, Loaded and Ice magazines.

Fitness Modeling

Unlike other types of modeling, fitness modeling focuses more on displaying a physique that not only looks healthy and fit, but also athletic. Fitness modeling is a bit like bodybuilding, but with less emphasis on the size of the model’s muscles. Fitness modeling, of course, uses only the fittest models when selling health shakes, protein bars, fitness magazines, sports clothes, or any product targeting people who have fit and healthy lifestyles.

Obviously, the path towards having a successful career in fitness modeling is not an easy one. For starters, anyone who dreams of becoming a fitness model should always be in shape, all year round. And staying in shape here means maintaining a lean muscular look and having great muscle definition, not getting one of those bulky muscle-bound bodies bodybuilders have.

Once you’ve achieved your target physique, then document it by creating your own photo portfolio. Choose pics that show your body at its fittest and most athletic, then send them to fitness magazines or modeling agencies that just might think you have the look they’re looking for.

Another excellent way of getting into fitness modeling is to participate in fitness conventions or even joining fitness competitions. Search the Internet and you’ll find a wealth of information about such events. However, there are some things which you have to keep in mind before you take part in them. One is that you should know beforehand which federations have judging criteria that would be a perfect fit to the shape that you’re in right now. Then there’s the all-too-important part of knowing whether you really have what it takes to ably compete in these contests. Remember that these competitions require a routine, and you have to be able to decide whether you’re capable of performing such a routine.

Then of course, it helps to have a very healthy attitude towards these things. Very rarely do fitness magazines, modeling agencies and fitness federations come to the model. The model should go to them, and be willing to have their pictures published for free if need be. It’s a very humble way of starting out, but who knows? That particular picture could be your ticket to a successful fitness modeling career. Companies selling fitness-related products just might spot that pic of yours and decide to offer you a job modeling their merchandise. Better yet, always remember that there are movie and TV talent scouts everywhere looking for someone fit enough to star in action-themed projects.

Not everyone can become professional models, that much is true. Some may have the same physical attributes as the world’s top supermodels have. Some may be as tall as Nigerian supermodel Oluchi Onweagba, or as gorgeous as any of the Brazilian supermodels who have taken the modeling world by storm. But in very much the same way that not all good basketball players make it to the NBA, not all good-looking men and women can break into the world of professional modeling. Types of Modeling

There are many different types of models, but many of the top and most popular models today made their mark on the runway. Most supermodels like Gisele Bundchen, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Petra Nemcova and many others have in one way or another graced the runways of Milan, New York, Madrid, Paris and other major cities during fashion shows. The runway, so to speak, is where their careers actually took off, modeling creations by some of the world’s most famous fashion designers.

But runway modeling is not a walk in the park. There are a number of things that a person must keep in mind whenever he or she takes to the runway, because small things as to how your posture is or how you move your arms can spell the difference between success and failure in the highly competitive world of runway modeling.

Your shoulders, for instance, should not move while you’re walking. As much as possible, keep them still. Then there’s your arms. While all a male model has to do is just swing his arms naturally, a woman would do well to focus on keeping her upper arms close to her body so that her arms will swing more from the elbows down.

When walking, a female runway model must take longer strides, and walk with one foot in front of the other because this gives your hips a natural swinging motion. Men, meanwhile, just have to walk normally, only with longer strides.

Now being on the runway means that there are countless pairs of eyes set on you. This is nerve-wracking for many, but most models deal with it by focusing their eyes straight ahead of them, giving them that staring-off-into-the-distance look. Just remember not to stare into the glare of all the lights that will surely be on you, or you might just be blinded enough to step right off the runway’s ledge.

Models must be oozing with confidence, but a hunching model looks anything but a supremely confident person, so it is important that a model should always stand straight up, on and off the runway.

Many of the most famous models and actors today started their careers when some talent agent discovered them in such common places as a mall or a sidewalk. One is that you should show up early, and never be late for an audition. You wouldn’t want to antagonize the hairstylists, makeup designers, fashion coordinators who are working on the audition.

Also, it helps being genuinely pleasant. Acting like you’re the most important and most talented person in the room could only guarantee an early exit for you. Being a good listener is also a plus, as that would mean a smoother working relationship with the photographer, whose instructions you should follow as closely as you can. You should also be open to suggestions from makeup artists and hairstylists about what look works best for you, and don’t insist that you know better than them when it come to the way you look.

And since you’re just auditioning, you might want to bring a wide variety of clothing. Remember, you’re just auditioning, and therefore cannot expect the people who are holding the auditions to provide you with the clothing that you need. At least six different outfits will do.

And most importantly, be confident, and let that confidence shine through with every smile, move and pose that you make. You may be the most beautiful or most perfect person physically for the job, but without confidence, all that beauty will go for naught.

But just because there are more female models than male ones doesn’t mean becoming a male model is easy. In fact, male models are just as sought out as females, so that means competition in the field is pretty tough. So to get at least a fighting chance of making it in modeling, here are some tips that might help you look your best.

Get in shape. Not just getting in shape, but getting into the best possible shape. Now you don’t need to have rippling muscles. For male models, being toned and fit is more the norm.

If and when you land a modeling job, say, a photo shoot, there are a few things you should remember before going in front of the cameras. One is you should be clean from head to foot. If you’ve got dark circles or bags under your eyes, make sure you avoid any caffeinated drinks, get eight hours sleep and drink water before the day of the photo shoot. Also eating less than three hours before a photo shoot is a no-no.

These physical preparations, however, all go for naught if there’s something wrong about your attitude towards the job. Confidence is always essential not only for male models, but also for anyone in any given field. As a male model, you must be secure in how you look and your modeling ability. Anything less than unwavering self-confidence will result in a half-hearted performance of your job that will be apparent in pictures or on the runway.

Now when we say be confident, we don’t mean that you should be too confident. Remember that there are designers, choreographers and coaches who will tell you what they need from you during photo shoots and shows, so you should be flexible and open to suggestions from these people. And it would be of great importance if you show up for these gigs in a good mood, because a good mood shines through in the results. If you’re nervous about the job, bringing favorite CDs or any other stuff that could make you feel comfortable while on the job is a great idea.

Fellow Mexican Liliana Domínguez, meanwhile, possesses such an exotic beauty that has landed her modeling jobs for some of the biggest names in fashion, including Roberto Cavalli, Paco Rabanne, Dolce & Gabbana, Yves Saint Laurent and Kenneth Cole. Her beauty has also graced the covers of top fashion magazines like ELLE, Vogue, and Glamour.

Argentina is another Latin American country that has produced a number of top Latin models. Among the more successful Argentine models is Valeria Mazza, who appeared in the 1996 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue cover with Tyra Banks, as well as the covers of Glamour, ELLE, and Vogue. Some, like Ethiopian supermodel Liya Kebede, have held us in awe, and has since inspired minority models to aim high. Kebede has made history as the first person of color to ever be a spokesmodel for cosmetics giant Estée Lauder. One of the very few ethnically African models to star in major runway shows and fashion photo shoots, Kebede Kebede has been featured in ad campaigns for such companies as Yves Saint-Laurent, Louis Vuitton, Victoria's Secret, Gap, Dolce & Gabbana, Emanuel Ungaro, Revlon, Escada and Tommy Hilfiger. Also an actress who has appeared in Hollywood films like “The Good Shepherd”, and “Lord of War”, Kebede was chosen by the United Nations to become WHO Goodwill Ambassador for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health. The African nation of Nigeria also has its own contribution to the world of fashion in the person of Oluchi Onweagba. Oluchi, who now lives in New York City, has walked the runways of Paris, Milan, London and Tokyo for the world’s top designers and fashion houses, including Chanel, John Galliano, Giorgio Armani, Costume National and Christian Dior. A staple on the cover of fashion magazines, she has also appeared three times in the Swimsuit Issue of Sports Illustrated, and worked in ad campaigns for Victoria's Secret, Banana Republic, Gianfranco Ferré and Express, among others. Perhaps one of the most recognizable ethnic ebony models of all time is Alek Wek. A refugee from the civil war in her home country of Sudan, she is sometimes regarded as the ‘face of Africa’. Her distinctive looks have been showcased in numerous runway shows for the world’s most high-profile designers. Calvin Klein, John Galliano, Ermanno Scervino and Donna Karan all have had Wek walk the catwalk for them. She has also been featured in ads for Issey Miyake, Moschino, Victoria's Secret and make-up company Clinique. On top of it all, she has garnered many modeling awards. Not bad for a member of the Dinka ethnic group in the Sudan.

Admittedly, there are very few renowned Asian models in the modeling world today compared to their Caucasian, African-American and Latino contemporaries. But with the increasing popularity of high fashion and the booming economies of such Asian countries as China and Japan, it will soon follow that the demand for models of Asian descent will rise too.

Actually, some Asian women have already blazed the trail for future oriental models as early as two decades ago.

In the 1980s, Anna Bayle, a model from the Philippines, was regarded as the first Asian supermodel. She has worked with all the major designers from Europe, and considered one of the top ten models of the world, along with such names as Cindy Crawford and Linda Evangelista. Then there was half-Korean and half-black model Kimora Lee, who in the late 80s has become a self-professed muse for Chanel's Karl Lagerfeld.

The early 90s saw Yasmeen Ghauri, a Canadian model of Pakistani and German descent, do modeling jobs for Hermes, Versace, Victoria’s Secret and Givenchy, and opened the door for other South Asian-looking models to try their luck in the business. Siberian model Irina Pantaeva also rose to fame during this period, and her very Asian features have been prominently featured in a slew of advertising campaigns for such clothing firms as Levi’s and Gap.

A new generation of models has picked up where the above models left off. Of these younger Asian models, perhaps the best known is Devon Aoki, a Japanese-German-British model. At 5’5”, she is regarded as the world’s shortest supermodel, but has nevertheless worked for the fashion houses Lancôme, Chanel, and Versace. She also dabbles in acting, having appeared in a number of Hollywood films, including 2 Fast 2 Furious, Sin City and Dead or Alive.

Soon enough, a number of Asian models have also made quite an impact on the modeling world. There’s Indian model Ujjwala Raut, Japanese model Ai Tominaga, and Korean-American Hye Rim Park. Between them, they have done modeling work for major fashion houses ranging from Banana Republic to Christian Dior.

So while the modeling industry is still predominantly black and white, it cannot be denied that there is a place for Asian models in this highly competitive industry. Let’s just hope that other Asian models on the rise such as Du Juan, Aline Nakashima, Juliana Imai and Anne Watanabe can carry the torch lighted by Anna Bayle and the others.

If you are a professional model, a photographer will most likely guide you through a variety of model poses throughout the photo shoot. But if you are an inspiring model and are still working your way up to the top—you may have to control your poses to ensure great headshots and sample modeling photographs.

Breathe
Although sometimes concentration enhances a good photograph, obvious concentration can distract and often ruin a good photograph as well. Do not hold your breath for a modeling pose; always remember to breathe and appear at ease.

Posture
Bad posture is an unrecognized flaw in many people. However, for models, posture is a harmful flaw. Always remember to keep your back straight and your shoulders up. Slouching affects the mood of the photograph and enlarges the appearances of your stomach. In addition to your back and shoulders, always remember to flex your stomach muscles. Limbs
Symmetry is officially out in the modeling world. When posing, make sure to differentiate your arms and legs with asymmetrical poses. If you have one arm long and straight by your side, make sure the other arm is bent. Whether a big or small angle, the bend will make the modeling pose look more real, less artificial. Continue the asymmetry to your legs. If one leg is locked straight, give the other leg a casual bend.

Camera
Although the camera is the ultimate focal point of a modeling photo shoot, great models do not look directly into the camera. To enhance the quality of your photo shoot, look away from the camera with a mix of head and eye poses. Looking off to the right or left side, or tiling your neck to either side can help you avoid direct eye contact with the camera. In many cases, your head and neck can remain stationary in your modeling pose—and your eyes can do all the work. Head and eye positions, coupled with personable facial expressions make for great model poses.

Sitting Poses
If you are sitting down during your photo shoot—don’t think it’s ok to slack off. In fact, sitting photo shoots require a lot of extra work. If you are sitting down or reclining, it’s important to put your eight on the back of one thigh, rather than distributing your weight equally on both thighs. If you roll one hip up from the ground or surface, shifting your weight will be simple. This pose results in a slimming effect that you don’t want to miss out on.

Cleavage
To make sure your best assets shine, there are a few basic guidelines to follow. Based on two distinct poses, a forward lean and a backward lean, any model with any breast size can maximize cleavage. When leaning forward, either bring your arms together at your waist, keep your arms straight at the elbows and clasp your hands together below your waist, or simply cross your arms. When leaning backward, raise your arms about your shoulders and head, keep your arms apart, and always slouch for the best cleavage results.

Smile
If you have a naturally beautiful smile—show your pearly whites with pride, just not every time. If you smile in each modeling pose, modeling agents will notice your lack of versatility, not your smile. To add variety to your modeling poses, try switching up your smile with a cute frown, a bratty bout, a friendly laugh, or even an edgy scowl. Your facial expressions can make or break your modeling poses. Let your smile show, but make sure to show what else you can do.

Lifestyle
The lifestyle pose evokes a sense of everyday living with common body movements and facial expressions. Throughout the day, moments of happiness, love, anger, and hope arise. To succeed at the lifestyle pose, each model must be able to recreate these everyday emotions.

Movement
The movement pose captures a specific action, such as running or jumping. Because this pose is most often used for a marketing photo shoot—the model is used to promote a product. Each model must be able to smile and laugh when using the products in the photo shoot.

Portrait
This modeling pose emphasizes the face of the model—and relies purely on facial features. The model will be in modest makeup and relaxed hair and should pose with a casual, genuine smile. Many portrait photographs are close up and emphasize details of the model’s face. If you are scheduled for a portrait photo shoot, make sure to pay extra attention to your skin and drink at least 8-12 glasses of water a day.

Body
Full-length photographs require body poses. Models are encouraged to shift weight between hips and make arms and lengths into asymmetrical stances. Although many body poses do not require specific facial expressions, putting your entire body into character during full-length poses helps your body find a natural balance.
